The Treeathlon project aims to make the municipalities of Biharia and Derecske greener, more resilient and more pleasant places to live. The project addresses key challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, water management and the environmental impact of transport through practical, locally applicable solutions.
The Treeathlon Action Plan focuses on developing urban green infrastructure, planting and adopting trees, creating urban microforests and biodiversity-friendly gardens, as well as introducing nature-based solutions for rainwater retention and management. Other important areas include green waste management and composting, the development of cycling infrastructure, reducing the environmental impact of transport, and raising environmental awareness.
An important element of the programme is the active involvement of the local community. Tree planting and adoption programmes, community events, school activities and environmental awareness campaigns are designed to encourage residents to take an active role in making their communities greener. As part of the project, a total of 1,000 new trees are planned to be planted in Biharia and Derecske in 2026–2027, with 500 trees in each municipality.
The Action Plan sets out the long-term direction of the project until 2035 and includes concrete measures, timelines, responsibilities and indicators for monitoring progress towards its objectives.
