On 18 June 2026, the first professional seminar of the project entitled “Treeathlon” (Project Code: ROHU00467) was held in Derecske within the framework of the INTERREG VI-A Romania–Hungary Programme.
The full title of the Treeathlon project – “Small-Scale Sustainable Urban Solutions for Improving Ecosystem Services and Reducing Transport-Related Pollution in Biharia and Derecske” – clearly reflects the programme’s and participants’ commitment to environmental protection. An important element of this commitment is the promotion of optimized and responsible water use and water conservation.
Accordingly, the main topic of the first seminar was the importance of water bodies and wetlands, as well as sustainable water management. Thanks to the well-prepared speakers and the active participation of attendees, the event fully achieved its objectives. It facilitated knowledge exchange among experts, public service employees, and decision-makers from Derecske and Biharia, while also initiating joint discussions on the application of nature-based urban solutions.
The seminar was opened by Mayor Anikó Rácz. Participants then took part in professional presentations and interactive programme elements focusing on:
- the ecological and social significance of wetlands,
- opportunities for sustainable water management,
- nature-based urban solutions,
- factors threatening wetlands, and
- good practices for local rainwater retention and utilization.
The professional event represented an important step towards achieving the project’s objectives. Shared thinking, exchange of experiences, and learning about good practices contribute to creating a more sustainable and liveable urban environment in both Derecske and Bihor.
We would like to thank all participants and contributors for their active involvement and valuable professional input.
The event is implemented within the framework of the INTERREG VI-A Romania–Hungary Programme and is financed by the European Union through the Interreg Fund, with co-financing provided by Romania and Hungary.
